Shire of Mundaring Art Collection.

The drawing Land combines imagery together from the wider Mundaring area. Central to the composition is a young settler about to chop down a tree, based on a photograph taken in 1923 that I sourced from the archives of Western Australia.Running towards the figure is what remains of the foundation of railway sleepers which iron railway tracks would have been secured on top of. These railway sleepers can be found at the Sculpture Park. The low tech method that the settler is using to chop down the tree, the density of the bush and how large the tree is pay encourage the audience to consider the physicality which characterised earlier settle engagement with the landscape.
